alpha hydroxy acids – have exfoliating and emollient properties. Topical applications have beneficial effects on the corneum layer, the epidermis and the dermis. AHA has a wide range of applications as it is used in acne preparations, to reduce rough areas of sun-damaged skin and to improve the appearance of aging skin. The most commonly used AHA’s are glycolic, lactic, malic, tartaric and citric acids.
tca – trichloracetic acid is known for being less reactive than AHA’s and therefore it can be used on most skin types. It causes total necrosis of surface cells resulting in an immediate lifting of the skin and in the smoothing and softening of fine lines. TCE is often mixed with other acids thereby increasing its efficacy without the risk of trauma of using higher strengths.
salicylic acid – is a beta acid, and it is a natural safe substance. It is extracted from wintergreen leaves, sweet birch and other plants, and it is found in aspirin. Salicylic acid hastens the removal of dead skin cells, softening facial lines, refining pores and reducing hypigmentation. It is self-neutralizing, and it is a popular acne treatment because it is helpful in bringing impurities to the skin’s surface and in softening comedones. It is important to take caution of this acid if one is sensitive to aspirin.
retinol – a vitamin A derivative, it is known for its regenerating benefits and positive effects on acne.
Enzymes are proteins that originate in living cells and are capable of producing chemical changes in organic substances such as digestion. Enzymes used in skin treatments are generally of plant origin, and they digest the cells of the stratum corneum. They are useful cosmetic, cosmeceutical and clinical exfoliants.
